Internal Family systems

An Innovative Healing Approach

IFS encourages individuals to unburden and integrate their conflicting parts, leading to a healthier relationship between them and lessening internal conflicts. This can result in greater internal equilibrium, self-integration, and an empowered sense of self.

IFS, or Internal Family Systems, is an innovative healing approach developed by Richard Schwartz which views the psyche as composed of a multitude of parts, each having its own unique characteristics and functions. The primary parts of the psyche include the Self, Exiles, Managers, and Protectors. IFS seeks to guide individuals through their internal landscape, encouraging them to develop empathy and self-compassion for their various parts and create a safe and non-judgmental space for exploring and healing difficult emotions.

The IFS method typically involves the following steps:

  1. Establishing Safety: Together we create a safe, trusting, and supportive environment for you to explore your internal system.

  2. Identifying Parts: You are guided to identify and explore the different parts within your internal system. These parts may have distinct emotions, beliefs, or memories.

  3. Working with Protectors: Protective parts exist to shield you from pain or vulnerability. I help you to understand the positive intentions behind these parts and find healthier ways to fulfill their roles.

  4. Connecting with Exiles: Exiled parts often carry trauma or painful experiences. I help you to connect with these parts and processes their experiences with empathy and understanding.

  5. Dialogue and Collaboration: With my guidance, you engage in a dialogue between the different parts. This encourages communication and collaboration between the parts, fostering a more harmonious internal system.

  6. Unburdening Exiles: I help you to address and heal the wounds carried by the exiled parts. This may involve revisiting past traumatic experiences, processing emotions, and providing empathy and healing to these parts.

  7. Integration and Self-Leadership: The ultimate goal is to foster integration and cooperation between all parts, while cultivating a sense of self-leadership. You develop the ability to access your core self, characterized by qualities such as compassion, curiosity, and wisdom, to navigate their internal system effectively.
